Michael O’Sullivan was born in Cork City in 1959, and
at twelve moved with his family to Carrigtwohill in east
Cork. He was educated at the Christian Brothers School in
Midleton, Co. Cork, and at University College, Cork. His
work has been extensively published in Ireland, Britain
and the US. A selection of his poems was featured in the
Cloverdale Anthology of Irish Poetry in 1992. In 1993 he
was awarded the American Cloverdale Prize for Poetry.
His fi rst collection of poetry The Physics of Parting was
published in the same year. He has since published two
further books:The Judge Who Sentenced You to Your Own
Destiny in 2001 and Mornings of the Oresteia: New and
Selected Poems in 2008, as well as a chapbook, The Lover
of Ashes, in 2005.
Michael is a filmmaker and his short film Stranger in the
House won the Director’s Prize at the Clonmel International
Film Festival in 2010. His first feature film Because I Could
Not Stop for Death, based on the life and work of Emily
Dickinson, was completed in 2013.
